Basket Weave Stitch
I saw this stitch in Inspirations magazine, and thought it was a stitch with a lot of potential. It's simple to do but gives a lot of texture.
In this example, 6 strands of cotton floss are used, 3 of each color. Use less or more depending on the project. First step is to make vertical lines in the area to be stitched at regular intervals. You may want to make little marks if you have trouble spacing them.

Next, bring the need up on one side, just slightly below the top of your area.
Weave the needle through the vertical stitches and bring it to the back of the fabric.
Bring the needle up just a little below the top row and weave the needle through to the other side.

Fill the area.
Stitch an outline stitch around the stitched area. Split backstitch with one strand works well.
Finished area:
This stitch can be used for many other things than baskets, for example, a roof on a house, textured clothing and hats, furniture, just use your imagination!
