This tutorial is to make a felt house ornament. You can use the instructions to make any other type of felt ornament too, or skip the last step,
and applique your felt house to the background fabric of another larger project.
- Background fabric - simple woven cotton works well, but you can use other fabrics too.
- Fusible webbing
- Pattern - you will also need a reverse copy for making the felt pieces.
- Sewing thread
- Beads,ribbon, and fabric paints - optional
Trace your pattern on to the background fabric.
Decide if you want the windows to be cut out, or if you want them to be another piece of felt layered on the house piece. I'm using cut out
windows, so I am painted and stitching the window panes.
Cut your felt pieces of your house. Read the instructions
for cutting accurate pieces of felt
Sew the house section and the roof in place. You can use blanket stitching, stab stitches, or running stitches.
Next sew on the pieces of felt onto the house.
Add whatever embroidery details you wish now. I used blanket stitching on the roof, stem stitching for the roofing over the door, back stitch around the windows, a few satin stitches for the door knob. And a small dark bead and a larger white bead become lamp fixtures on each side of the door. When you are finished embroidering the house, cut away the background fabric to about one quarter inch around the house.
Sew the background fabric to the back with the sewing thread - be careful that no stitches show through to the front. If you wish to incorporated your house into another project stop here and applique it to the other fabric.
Sew on a hanger if desired, and cut a felt backing piece.
Stitch the backing felt onto the back with blanket stitches.
Remember - you can use these steps to make any felt shape you wish!
